Udaipur earns its nickname — the "City of Lakes" — honestly. Lake Pichola sits at the centre of almost everything worth seeing here: the City Palace rises straight out of its western bank, Jag Mandir floats on an island in the middle of it, and most of the old city's havelis and ghats face the water. It's compact enough to see the highlights in two focused days, and calm enough — compared to Jaipur or Jodhpur — that three or four days here doesn't feel like too many.

By Air: Maharana Pratap Airport (UDR) has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Bangalore and Ahmedabad. It's about 25 minutes from the city centre by cab.
By Train: Udaipur City railway station connects to Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Chittorgarh, with the Mewar Express and several overnight trains being the most common routes for tourists.
By Road: Udaipur sits on NH8, roughly 660 km from Delhi, 260 km from Ahmedabad, and 400 km from Jaipur — a comfortable overnight or early-morning drive from any of the three, and a common stop on Rajasthan road trips.
The old city around Lake Pichola is genuinely walkable — most of the top sights sit within 15–20 minutes of each other on foot. For anything further out (Fateh Sagar, Monsoon Palace, or a villa outside the city centre), autos and app-based cabs are easy to find and inexpensive. Self-drive scooty and bike rentals are widely available near the old city for a day or two of independent exploring, and most hotels or villas can point you to a reliable local operator.
The old city near Lake Pichola puts you closest to the main sights, but it gets noisy and cramped for groups — narrow lanes, small rooms, little privacy. For families, bachelor parties, or any group of six or more, a private villa outside the immediate old-city crush tends to work better: your own pool, your own kitchen, and 15–30 minutes to the main sights by auto rather than a five-minute walk through crowds.
